You probably haven’t run into a company like Olark before. We were pioneers in the chat space 12+ years ago: the first to make chat accessible to small businesses who didn’t have big budgets or engineering teams. Since then, we have been fully remote and bootstrapped, working to help our customers help theirs. We lead with our values, care deeply about our people, and are committed to making business more human. Last year we became a Public Benefit Corporation and made web accessibility our social impact focus.

We have a loved product, and an authentic team of Olarkers building that product. The culture, people policies, inclusivity, and remote environment we’ve built over the past 12+ years is something we’re all proud of.  We’re seeking an HR Generalist to join our team who wants to help us build an inspirational high performing accessible remote culture.

To start, you will report directly to our Chief of Staff who has been managing HR for the past 5+ years. We anticipate this role will eventually report into our CEO, with ongoing close collaboration with our Chief of Staff.

This is a hands-on position that directly impacts our day-to-day people policies and operations.

Big challenges you'll help us solve starting on day one:

  • Make Olark a beacon of accessibility. We need your help to realize our Public Benefit Corporation social impact goal of advocating for web accessibility by championing accessibility in our people processes and tools.
  • Lead our entire team to become champions of ongoing informal feedback, from living our #speak and #practice empathy core values everyday to create the trust necessary to speak candidly and empathically with every coworker.
  • Carve out a HR-specific role. HR has historically been a split role here at Olark. You will have the opportunity to make it your own. We care deeply about our teammates and will look to you to turn our care into process, policy, and enthusiasm.

Your primary responsibilities will be:

  • Benefits & payroll. Work closely with Olarkers and our benefits provider to ensure benefits are communicated, implemented and updated as necessary. Manage the entire payroll process as well as PTO, parental leave and extended leave.
  • Hiring, onboarding and offboarding:  Ensure a smooth process for the entire cycle of hiring, onboarding, and offboarding. Iterate as needed to ensure we are accessible, people-first, focused on the employee, and providing an incredible experience.
  • Leadership development and training: surface people management needs and create solutions to assist: whether these are internal trainings, external workshops, new processes/policies, etc. Act as the main point of contact for all people management needs.
  • Conflict management: work closely with employees and managers as needed on sensitive topics. Provide counsel, recommendations and support. Consult outside advisors as needed.
  • Policy creation and management: break down tough legalese and concepts into user friendly company policies and processes. Align culture and values. Constantly think through new offerings we should provide our team, remote best practices, etc.
  • Retreat planning & execution: plan our yearly team-wide retreat, and assist teams with mini retreats throughout the year.
  • Support Chief of Staff: with building out new policies, thinking big picture about people management process and strategy, branding, communication, and remote-first best practices.

What we’d like to see in your background & skills we think are necessary:

  • HR experience: preferably as a generalist who has managed a diversity of projects at once.
  • A focus on details: You love keeping operations and processes organized; you’re on top of dates, can juggle multiple projects, and can quickly prioritize.
  • Inclusivity & accessibility advocate: You make sure everyone and their viewpoints are heard; you create policies with inclusivity and accessibility in mind; you’re always thinking of what’s next in ensuring we have a safe workplace where everyone feels they belong.
  • Self-directed, but also open to collaboration: You are happy to work independently, but know when to ask for help. You know how to give, and receive, direct feedback.  You are a team player and comfortable contributing to projects as well as open to leading projects.
  • Excellent communicator: You are able to clearly communicate your thoughts, especially in text based communication. You know when a conversation should be in Slack, written out long form, or over another medium (i.e. Zoom).
  • Empathetic: You realize listening is just as important as speaking your mind. You assume good faith of your teammates when there is conflict and are curious about understanding their perspectives.
  • Comfortable with working remotely: We are entirely distributed and you’ll communicate via remote tools: email, Slack, Zoom, etc.

You can expect a lot from us:

First off, make sure to read about our team culture at olark.com/jobs, and our values at olark.com/values. Beyond what you see there, you can expect:

  • A great remote culture and team: Even though we’re separated our team makes the effort to connect to one another and we provide in person opportunities to further enhance that bond. We genuinely like each other.
  • A life outside of work: Olarkers generally work 40 hour weeks. Work is a marathon, not a sprint.  We are building a company for the long haul.
  • Great compensation and benefits: competitive pay, phone/internet stipend, health benefits, $1K vacation bonus every year, 401k, and charitable donation matching.
